The Akron Marathon is committed to hosting a world-class event while considering its social, economic, and environmental impact. Through thoughtful planning, responsible practices, and continuous improvement, we work to reduce waste and energy consumption, support local economic growth, and promote healthy, active lifestyles. Our goal is to make a positive, lasting impact on our community while creating an exceptional race experience.
The Akron Marathon Race Series is a proud member of Racing For Sustainability.
In partnership with Sneakers4Good, we are giving shoes to those in need, displacing CO2 emissions, and conserving water.
If you have gently used shoes, we can help you pass them on and reduce waste!
During our Health & Fitness Expo, you can choose two ways to donate your shoes:
Every year, over 20 million trees are cut down to produce the single use cups. On average, marathon participants use 55 cups from start to finish.
Our goal at the Akron Marathon is to reduce our dependability on single use cups to make less of an impact on the environment. You can help by committing to carrying your own hydration. Whether it’s a HydraPak Speedcup or a water bottle, our fluid stations can refill with water and sports drink.
Fluid stations will be equipped to fill cups or bottles with both water and sports drink at the final table at each station.
A combination of the Swedish term “plocka upp” which means to pick up and the act of jogging. Plogging is the act of picking up litter while you run, jog, or walk. It’s easy to incorporate it into your training routine and it makes a big impact.
You can come plogging with us to help clean up the race course. Learn more about plogging and sign up for any of our plogging events on our plogging page.
